Public
Speaking: How to "Wow the Crowd":
Here's
a huge mistake that most seminar speakers make:
they use their normal speaking voice when doing
public speaking or seminars.
But
this is actually a huge mistake!
You
should never speak using your normal voice because
you will actually lose at least 67% of your listeners!
Here's
why: studies have proven that people listen at
three different speeds:
Some
people are "fast listeners" and they'll
expect you to speak fast.
Some
people are "slow listeners" - and you
guessed it - they'll expect you to speak slowly.
The slow listeners need time to chew on your words
and digest what you've said. If you speak too
fast, you'll lose them and they'll hate you.
The
fast listeners have pictures moving through their
mind at a zillion miles per hour and you have
to speak fast to keep up with those pictures.
And
some people are more "medium" speed
listeners, and they'll prefer a moderate speed
with a lot of ups and downs in your tone with
a singsong quality.
Chances
are that your conversational speed is either slow,
medium or fast and so if you only speak in your
normal voice, you'll lose two-thirds of the rest
of the group!
The
answer is to cycle through speaking at different
speeds. You're going to have to practice this
a little bit, but it's very easy to do and master.
You'll
probably find that either slow or fast is hard
for you so you'll have to put a little extra effort
into speaking at that speed.
You
will actually "wow the crowd" by speaking
at three different speeds because studies have
been done rating the charisma of speakers, and
the results proved that the speakers rated with
the most charisma were - you guessed it - the
ones that spoke at three different speeds!
Speaking
at 3 different speeds creates tension, drama,
and resolution and add a tremendous dynamic to
your talk.
